Smarter Refills, Real-Time Savings

A mockup for Fuel Flux app on mobile screens

Fuel prices are unpredictable. For cost-conscious drivers, this means constantly jumping between apps and price boards, guessing where to fill up next, or simply giving up and paying more than they should. Fuel Flux set out to change that. This case study explores how I led the design of a real-time fuel tracking app — giving users the power to plan, compare, and save with confidence. The result? A clean, data-rich product that helped people take control of their fuel habits — and delivered immediate value from day one.

The Challenge

While fuel comparison sites existed, most were clunky, overwhelming, or felt like static price lists with little real-time insight. Fuel Flux wanted to do more:

  • Provide live, location-based fuel data in a clean, user-first interface

  • Help users understand their fuel usage and spending over time

  • Empower drivers to make smarter decisions with less mental load

  • Build a brand that felt modern, intuitive, and fast

We needed to design something smarter than a price board — a dashboard that actually supported people’s everyday fuel habits.

The Goal

Design and launch a minimum lovable product (MLP) for Fuel Flux that helps users:

  • See real-time fuel prices in their area

  • Track spending trends across days and weeks

  • Discover the cheapest nearby stations instantly

  • Visually understand how much fuel they’ve used and when to fill up

The Process

We kicked off by mapping the real-world experience of buying fuel: from decision-making to regret at the bowser. I then worked across product and engineering to bring key user goals into a single dashboard:

Key UX decisions included:

  • Live fuel gauge with % readout for visual clarity

  • Simple spending tracker to help users spot over-time patterns

  • “Fuel Finder” module for real-time, location-aware station discovery

  • Modular cards that could scale or swap for future features

  • High-contrast, accessible interface for clear reading while driving or outdoors

Solution

Fuel Flux launched in Beta with a modular dashboard built for speed and clarity:

  • A bold, card-style layout surfacing live data, usage insights, and savings

  • Fuel gauge with a friendly percentage ring and actionable refuel prompts

  • Spending insights over 7/14/30 days with average cost-per-fill

  • Geo-tagged station listings with live price pulls

  • Colour-coded price indicators to show savings opportunities

Impact

Fuel Flux's launch is still in early Beta but has already seen immediate traction in user retention and behaviour:

  • 45% increase in return usage within first two weeks post-launch

  • Users reported feeling more “in control” and “fuel aware” in usability feedback

  • Location-based station searches became the most-used feature

  • Design system used as the basis for future features (Rewards, Eco Mode)

Key takeaways

“Fuel price tools don't just need to be accurate — they need to feel worth checking again tomorrow.

  • Clarity and confidence beat raw data dumps

  • Even with utility apps, a touch of personality (like tone, colour, motion) creates loyalty

  • Designing in modules makes it easier to test what works, iterate fast, and expand smart

  • We had a lot of feedback for inclusions of charging station locations.
